What made you want to design high-end contemporary menswear? 

 I always had a deep interest in fashion and clothing design, particularly in the realm of menswear. This passion has stemmed from experiences back in high school, like exploring different styles, following fashion trends, and admiring the work of renowned designers.

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

In high school, me and a few of my friends talked about the idea of being fashion designers and I always told them I would go to college to learn the business, which is when I knew I would take it seriously. 

What did the beginnings of Jacob & John look like?

Establishing a strong brand identity was crucial in the early stages of Jacob & John's journey. It involved choosing a distinctive brand name, designing unique pieces and visual identity, as well as crafting a brand narrative that resonated with our target audience.

Where do you find inspiration?

My inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere—it's about staying open-minded, observant, and curious about the world around you. I keep a sketchbook, collecting mood boards, and regularly exposing oneself to diverse influences help me cultivate a rich and dynamic creative process.

How would you describe the style you aim for your brand?

I like to create unique pieces from rich fabrics that produce the best quality product but not too bold for my target audience. 

What sets your brand apart from the rest?

We focus on emphasizing exceptional quality and craftsmanship in every garment helps set our brand apart in a crowded market. Using premium materials, employing skilled artisans, and paying meticulous attention to detail created a reputation for superior craftsmanship and durability.

What brand values are most important for Jacob & John?

Jacob & John prioritize exceptional quality in materials, craftsmanship, and construction. This commitment to quality ensures that our garments not only look stylish but also withstand the test of time, aligning with the brand's ethos of offering enduring elegance. Also, authenticity could be another essential value for us, emphasizing transparency, honesty, and integrity in all aspects of the brand's operations. By maintaining authenticity in our brand identity, communication, and product offerings, we can build trust and loyalty with our audience.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to a new designer?

If I were to offer one piece of advice to a new fashion designer, it would be this:

"Stay true to your vision and never stop learning and evolving."

Fashion design is a highly competitive and dynamic field, and it's essential to stay grounded in your creative vision while remaining open to new ideas, trends, and techniques. Trust your instincts, embrace experimentation, and don't be afraid to take risks and push boundaries in your designs.

At the same time, continue to educate yourself, seek inspiration from diverse sources, and stay informed about industry trends, technologies, and practices. Fashion is constantly evolving, and by staying curious and adaptable, you'll be better equipped to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the fashion industry.

Remember that success in fashion design often requires resilience, persistence, and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures. Stay passionate, stay focused, and stay committed to honing your craft and making your mark as a fashion designer.

What was your previous work experience before launching your brand?

I was a forklift operator, I worked 2 warehouse jobs to pay my way through design school.

How important is sustainability to your brand? What sustainable measures have Jacob & John taken to better the environment?

We prioritize sourcing materials from suppliers who adhere to ethical and sustainable practices. This includes using organic, recycled, and eco-friendly materials whenever possible, as well as ensuring fair labor practices throughout our supply chain. We use recycled and recyclable materials for our packaging to minimize environmental impact. This includes biodegradable garment bags, recycled cardboard boxes, and paper-based branding materials.

What was the toughest circumstance you overcame when just starting your business?

Securing sufficient funding to launch Jacob & John was a significant hurdle, especially for us who didn’t have access to substantial capital or investment opportunities. This can restrict the ability to invest in crucial areas like production, marketing, and distribution for any new business. 

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career, what would it be?

"Embrace failure as a steppingstone to success and never stop learning."

Failure is an inevitable part of any journey, especially when embarking on a new career path. Instead of being discouraged by setbacks or mistakes, view them as valuable learning opportunities that can ultimately propel you forward. Embrace challenges, be resilient in the face of adversity, and use setbacks as fuel for growth and improvement.

Furthermore, prioritize continuous learning and development throughout your career. The world is constantly evolving, and staying curious, adaptable, and open to new ideas and experiences is key to staying relevant and thriving in your chosen field. Seek out opportunities for professional growth, whether through formal education, mentorship, or hands-on experience, and never become complacent in your pursuit of excellence.

Remember that success is not defined by the absence of failure but by how you respond to it and grow from it. Stay focused on your goals, maintain a positive mindset, and trust in your ability to overcome obstacles and achieve your aspirations.

Do you have a passion other than fashion or design?

Yes, math has always been my favorite subject in school, and I got my master’s degree in finance. I have a great career in banking as well as the fashion industry. 

What is the most important thing you would like your brand to be recognized for?

I want Jacob & John to be recognized for the quality and sustainability of our products. 

What should consumers expect to see next from Jacob & John?

We have 2 new collections releasing this year and a collaboration with a major retailer, in the next few months.
