What was your previous work experience before launching your brand?

Holding a Business and Tech Degree, my background involves working with Canadian and U.S startups, consulting on their website design, and assisting with finding and retaining people for their organization. My experience gives me expert knowledge on what makes a startup scale, how to create a unique value proposition, and how to successfully find product-market fit.

What is your earliest design memory for this brand?

I’ve been passionate about fashion and style for the last decade, but really it was the summer of 2018 where this business idea came to fruition. I realized there was big value in providing accessory bundles for men after not being able to find something similar offered at any other brands. We realized there was a need for something like this, and thus, Atypical Man was born.

"Our inspiration comes from the community of people who support us and who voice their enthusiasm for our mission."

Where do you find inspiration?

Our inspiration comes from the community of people who support us and who voice their enthusiasm for our mission. We started this business with a theory that bundling premium accessories and offering them at good prices will help men that are on the fence about accessories get started with fashion, or dive deeper into the fashion world. Since then, our theory has been proven true, with our bundles being our top selling products and customer satisfaction is at almost 100%. To date, we have had only a couple of customers that were upset with their order due to either reason outside of our control or a misunderstanding. This gives us confidence that we are on the right track and are targeting the right customers.

Do you have a favorite piece that you have designed?

We love what we’ve accomplished with our accessory sets so far, but if we had to choose one piece, it would be the Anchor Bracelet. It’s a minimalist and slick-looking piece that really shines better in person than in the photos. Everyone is always impressed to find out it’s one size fits all.

What would you like your brand to be known for?

We’re making premium, vegan-friendly accessories in matching bundle sets to give you everything you need to stand out at an affordable price.

How important is social media to your brand?

Social media is very important to our brand and we spend a lot of time on there. Without Instagram, we would not be able to see the success we’ve accomplished.

What is your favorite fashion film or show?

Teaching Men’s Fashion on YouTube is our favorite, as he is constantly promoting the latest and greatest fashion trends for men.

How would you describe your personal style?

Clean, minimalist, and classy.

"Receive validation for your product from real people, not just your closest friends."

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve heard and do you follow it?

When it comes to legal advice, incorporate and get a business bank account the second you expect to make sales. In regards to strategy, take it day by day and make gradual gains. Always make gains! Finally, from a mentality standpoint, stay positive – be optimistic, but realistic. Make sure people want to pay for your product or service. Receive validation for your product from real people, not just your closest friends.

Do you feel working in the fashion industry is different today than from when you started out? Why or why not?

It’s an entirely different world now than when we first started, and we’ve been blessed to have built a strong online presence around a sustainable brand when the COVID-19 lockdowns kicked in. We saw most of our growth this year due to an increase in online purchases and public awareness for supporting ethical and sustainable products.
