Goitom Woldegebriel, an Eritrean tailor lived 30 years of his life between the war-torn countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia. When his native country of Eritrea gained independence he named his son Áwet, which means victory in Tigrinya.
In 1998, Áwet was forced to flee his native country becoming a refugee overnight migrating from camp to camp. In 2000 Áwet was granted asylum in the US.
In 2020, ÁWET launched his namesake brand in New York City. ÁWET New York was founded with two commitments: to create iconic "livewear" collections and to employ and support garment workers hardest hit by the pandemic.
Áwet's father would say, “Always look out for people with greatness in their hands" and that’s exactly what we did during the pandemic. As the collection grows, so does our commitment to support and invest in local communities around the world. The goal of our collection is to ensure that you feel this power when you wear it.
